Comprehensive Keyword and Keyphrase Selection
September 13th, 2007 by admin
When selecting keywords you always want to keep in mind that targeted keywords will produce targeted results. I frequently ask small business owners what keywords they wish to use and I get random idiotic keywords that are so off target they are not worth using. By selecting poor keywords you are putting yourself against unnecessary competition and going after useless traffic or off-target results. Keep in mind when selecting keywords that if you choose poor keywords you create extra inefficiencies such as unnecessary phone calls, wasted bandwidth and increased statistics data to sort through that for the most part will only give you a false impression of positive results.
So in essence choosing the correct keywords and keyphrases will make your website effective, efficient and smart! So lets begin with a few examples of bad keywords and good keywords so you can get an idea of what is a good mindset to have when putting on your SEO hat and getting the cogs turning.
Below are some proper keyword examples:
| Bad Keyword Selection: Painting ServicesGood Keyword Selection: Interior Painting Services in Phoenix AZBad Keyword Selection: Nursing JobsGood Keyword Selection: Medical Staffing and Nursing Jobs in Chicago ILBad Keyword Selection: Programming Services
Good Keyword Selection: Financial Application C++ Programming Services |

Also keep in mind that its a good idea to review your keywords on search engines before using them to review their search volumes and advertiser competition. If a keyword or keyphrase has 20 million results on a typical search it is probably not a good idea to use that and to rethink the combination or keywords you are using. Remember if your selection primarily contains keywords with high search volumes and high amounts of results you are making it that much more difficult in your attempt to make your way up to the first or second page results. So in short using these types of keywords is setting yourself up for failure before you even start. There are typical areas of the internet that are very saturated and can be difficult even with proper keyword selection to get good results. Typical areas are certain areas in real estate, loans, financial sites and certain types of software. So before you spend a lot of time and effort into brainstorming and selecting keywords its a good idea to try a few out first on the search engines like google or yahoo to make sure you are not wasting your time.
